In God We Trust -- United We Stand -- September 11, 2001 Memorial Garden
The Beaumont Council of Garden Clubs is planning a Memorial Garden to commemorate the recent devastating events in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. It is hard to imagine such a disaster could befall our great country. During the aftermath and confusion in the days following the event, some of our members began to think of ways to remember the victims. First thought was pavers on the Tree of Life Memorial, that grew to thoughts of a small, simple garden. Then it occurred to us that this was much bigger than just us -- it needed to be a community-wide project. Therefore, this project is to be for the city of Beaumont and all surrounding communities. It will be located on land in the Beaumont Botanical Gardens, along Babe Zaharias Drive in Tyrrell Park. After all, these gardens are a symbol of hope and growth. How else do you describe a seed sprouting?
Features of the Garden will be:
Pentagon shaped garden approximately 50 feet by 50 feet, enclosed by a black wrought iron fence with brick columns eight feet high.
Concrete walkway six feet wide within the fence in the pentagon shape.
Black granite benches along the walks.
Three flagpoles - American Flag, Texas Flag, and City of Beaumont Flag.
A pair of massive bronze eagles guard the entrance.
Granite twin towers six feet tall, and seven additional granite towers of various colors, sizes and shapes to symbolize the fallen buildings and thousands of lives lost. The twin towers represent the World Trade Center Towers. The other towers represent U.S. Armed Services, N.Y. Police Dept., N.Y. Fire Dept., Medical profession, American Airlines, and United Airlines.
The granite towers will be placed in the center of the memorial on a raised, pentagon shape brick platform, capped with granite.
Between the walkway and center feature will be a seasonal planting of red, white, and blue flowers.
Evergreen shrubs will be planted around the outer perimeter of the pentagon.
With the generous assistance of all citizens, we know this will be a beautiful meditation area, and a lasting tribute to all of the victims of this catastrophic event in our nation's history. Every dollar makes a difference.
Next page is a form listing costs for certain items. If you purchase a major item, a plaque with your name will be attached to it. Your name will be listed on the main donor plaque for a donation of $250.00 and up, with no item designated. Tree of Life Memorial pavers are located in the Warren Loose Conservatory, and display the name of the person you wish to memorialize. All donations are tax deductible under Sec. 501(c)(3). We look forward to hearing from you soon. Be sure to come visit and enjoy your gardens.
Sincerely,
Sharon S. Odegar, President
Bob D. Whitman, Executive Director
